On Sept. 8, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach hosted a fall field day at the ISU Northern Research and Demonstration Farm in Kanawha, Iowa.
The fall field day focused on water quality topics, cover crops, corn rootworms, and included a wetland tour. Matt Schnabel, superintendent of the ISU Northern Research and Demonstration Farm, began the field day with a review of the growing season. ISU Extension and Outreach Entomologist Erin Hodgson answered questions about insect issues and discussed corn rootworm management for 2017. Jamie Benning, ISU Extension and Outreach water quality program manager, presented recent progress in improving water quality in north central Iowa farmland. Farmers also had the opportunity to listen to Bruce Voights, Wright County Natural Resources Conservation Service, discuss recent projects from the Iowa Clean Water-Water Quality Initiative that are a part of the Boone River Watershed.
ISU Extension and Outreach Field Agronomist Angie Rieck-Hinz demonstrated the benefits of cover crops with late summer seeded cover crop demonstration plots, and Paul Kassel, ISU Extension and Outreach field agronomist, spoke to the crowd about late season crop production issues, such as late season crop diseases, and corn and soybean development.
