As harvest progresses, keep in mind that sampling fields for soybean cyst nematode (SCN) after harvest is a great way to finish up the crop season. Results of fall samples from corn fields can be very useful in developing or adjusting SCN management plans for 2027 if soybeans will be grown in the fields. Alternatively, fall sample results from soybean fields may provide information that helps explain 2026 soybean yields. This article provides additional details on how to collect meaningful SCN soil samples and where to send them for processing.

Growing resistant soybeans is critical to maintaining profitable soybean yields in fields infested with the soybean cyst nematode (SCN). The newly updated ISU Extension publication CROP1649, “Soybean Cyst Nematode-resistant Soybean Varieties for Iowa,” lists nearly 800 SCN-resistant varieties from 30 brands offered by 22 companies. This article provides information about the relative maturity, the genetic source(s) of resistance, and other important attributes of the varieties in the publication. A link to the online publication is provided.

Harvest is underway across Iowa, and one of the biggest surprises this season may not be on the yield monitor. It is at the fuel pump. Diesel prices have increased sharply ahead of the 2026 harvest season, substantially increasing operating costs, making every tillage pass more expensive than budgeted for last winter. Harvest fuel costs are unavoidable; however, you may not need as much fall (or spring) tillage as you think to prepare for the 2027 growing season.
