Wait Until Soil Temps Drop Before Applying Anhydrous Ammonia

Anhydrous ammonia applied before daily soil temperatures remain below 50 degrees Fahrenheit and continue trending lower can result in the nitrogen loss that can impact crop development and have negative environmental impacts, such as enhanced leaching into groundwater and streams once converted to nitrate.

October corn yield forecast for Iowa dropped to 169 bushels per acre, a significant reduction from the August and September forecasts of 179 bushels per acre (see October USDA-NASS forecast). If realized, 2010 yields will rank sixth among the last seven years, higher only than the yields of 2006 (166 bushels per acre). Numerous published and anecdotal yield reports substantiate lower than expected yields this year.

Flooded Grain and Other Harvest Issues

Harvest is underway and a few issues stemming from the unusual weather patterns last summer are coming up. On September 30 the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship issued a statement saying that grain submerged (over the grain) in flood waters was to be considered contaminated and therefore not eligible for entry into food-feed markets.
