New cut-off date for over-the-top dicamba use in Iowa for 2023

On February 16, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved the label amendments that further restrict the use of over-the-top (OTT) dicamba in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana. For the 2023 season, the revised federal labels for XtendiMax, Engenia and Tavium contains a new cut-off date restriction for OTT dicamba use:

Don’t forget your annual dicamba training for 2022

One of the label requirements for the dicamba products labeled for over-the-top use in soybean (Xtendimax, Tavium, Engenia) is that applicators must complete a special dicamba training annually. If you need to complete this training, go to the Agribusiness Association of Iowa website, and you will find links to the companies’ websites with their training information. Note that the links are found under the heading “Product Labels and Information, see image below.

In October 2020, EPA approved five-year registrations (until 2025) for dicamba products including XtendiMax (Bayer), Engenia (BASF) and Tavium (Syngenta) for over-the-top use in Xtend and XtendFlex soybeans. These new dicamba product registrations included national cutoff dates (June 30 in most cases) and mandatory use of additional volatility reduction agents (VRAs) in the tank.

Reporting a Suspected Dicamba Incident

If you have experienced a suspected dicamba incident contact the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) at 515-281-8591 to file a report. You may file an “Incident Report” or a “Documentary Report” with the IDALS Pesticide Bureau. 

Reporting dicamba incidents helps evaluate the impact of dicamba use in Iowa and provides valuable information.

The 2020 registration for Xtendimax, Engenia and the extension of the Tavium registration included additional restrictions for protection of Endangered Species. 

Iowa counties with Endangered Species protection include Allamakee, Cerro Gordo, Clayton, Delaware, Dickinson, Dubuque, Emmet, Hancock, Howard, Jackson, Kossuth and Osceola.

Dicamba 2020: What went wrong in Iowa?

There is no question that dicamba injury across the Iowa landscape in 2020 is the most extensive it has been since the introduction of dicamba in the 1960s. ISUEO field agronomists and commercial agronomists in several areas of the state report nearly all non-dicamba resistant soybean are showing symptoms characteristic of dicamba, and in many fields the injury is fence row to fence row.  This is not the type of injury we have observed in the past; it’s at a landscape level.
