Updated SCN-resistant Soybean Variety List Has More with Peking Resistance than Ever

November 20, 2023
Number of varieties.

Each year, Iowa State University prepares a list of soybean varieties available in Iowa that are resistant to the soybean cyst nematode (SCN). The list was updated in October 2023 and the publication is now available online. There are 48 more varieties in the 2023 list than in 2022 including 40 more with Peking SCN resistance. Varieties with Peking resistance are highly useful for managing SCN because they limit reproduction of most Iowa SCN populations and protect against yield loss more effectively than varieties with the common PI 88788 resistance.

More soybean varieties with Peking SCN resistance for 2023, but more needed

November 22, 2022
Yellowing field of soybeans.

A list of SCN-resistant soybean varieties for use in Iowa is compiled and made available every fall as ISU Extension publication PM 1649. The updated list recently has been made available online. Overall there are fewer SCN-resistant soybean varieties than in past years, but there are varieties from more brands (27) in this year’s publication. Most importantly, there are 47 varieties with Peking SCN resistance in the 2022 list, which is 13 more than were in the list in 2021. Soybean varieties with Peking SCN resistance are highly valued because they limit reproduction of Iowa SCN populations much more than varieties with the common PI 88788 resistance.

Blog Post

The Crop Protection Network (CPN) has produced a new web book called Fungicide Use in Field Crops. Fungicides are an important crop protection tool for modern agriculture, and proper use decreases risk of fungal diseases and economic losses. This book highlights the importance of fungicides for yield protection, while considering economics, risks to humans and the environment, and prolonging use of fungicide modes of action.

Soybean Vein Necrosis Virus Identified in Iowa

July 18, 2013
Foliar symptoms of SVNV on soybean leaves

By Daren Mueller, Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology

Soybean vein necrosis virus (SVNV) was first confirmed in Iowa last season. Last year we did not see SVNV until August. This past week we identified SVNV in several locations in Iowa. It is not known yet if earlier symptoms may increase chances of yield loss. We will continue to monitor and provide updates.
