ISU On-Farm Demonstration Trials: Opportunities for Farmers

The Iowa State University on-farm cooperator demonstration trial program has a long-standing relationship with Iowa corn and soybean farmers. This program provides support and assistance to farmers interested in setting up strip trials to test new ideas on their farms. Local agricultural specialists, associated with ISU research farms, assist cooperators in the design, implementation and the analysis of the trial. The answers received from these trials allow farmers a firsthand look at products and practices so they can make better decisions on their operations.

On-farm trials are an easy way for farmers to learn how practices, products and equipment will work in their cropping systems. The concept of on-farm trials has been around for decades, with farmers placing rows or strips of different practices within their fields for comparison. On-farm trials are easier to conduct now with assistance from formalized on-farm trial programs and the use of GPS and precision technologies.
