As we on the Iowa State Extension Crops Team have been adjusting our programming and schedules to ensure we're still able to provide quality resources throughout COVID-19, we'd like to introduce you to one new resource: The Field Extension Education Laboratory (FEEL) Vlog series.

While we'd prefer to see all of you in person throughout the growing season and at trainings, we felt that this vlog series would be the next best thing. Plus, what a cool way to meet the personalities that regularly make appearances at FEEL and at field days throughout Iowa!

Hosting a Program at the Field Lab

While the Field Extension and Education Laboratory (FEEL) is primarily a public use facility, a principle of Extension and Outreach is providing educational opportunities to all who interact with growers, commodity groups, and other agriculture-related organizations. To accomplish this goal, FEEL makes its staff and resources available for agriculture-related industries for rented private events. These can include:

  • Professional Development

  • Clinics

  • Demonstrations

  • Training Sessions

The college classroom teaches you a multitude of things that you probably need to know in order to make sense of the world around you. But an internship that gives you experience in that world can mean the difference of succeeding in life or just getting by. As an agricultural communications major, I wanted a job that would help me to expand my knowledge in agriculture and give me some common public relations practice. Never did I imagine at the time that I would be working at the Iowa State University Field Extension Education Lab (FEEL) this past summer.

The Field Extension Education Lab has five clinics/workshops this summer in July and August. Below is a list of programming updates that correlate with current farmer concerns and this year’s crop issues:

Field Extension Education Laboratory

The Field Extension Education Laboratory, located in Boone, Iowa, is a 23-acre teaching and demonstration facility dedicated to providing a hands-on learning experience for crop production professionals. This facility has demonstrations used in a variety of programs held throughout the summer months. In these plots, we can show a wide range of management problems, solutions, and diagnostic challenges. It has air-conditioned classroom facilities that complement the in-field sessions, all of which are within walking distance.
