Over the past few decades, producers have begun to continually face herbicide resistant weed pressure throughout their cropping systems. Continuous use of the same herbicide program can quickly develop resistant weed biotypes, especially if there are no other weed management tactics being used.

After another relatively wet fall, late harvest season, and mild winter, early weed management may be important this spring for those who have persistent issues with winter annuals such as field pennycress and horseweed/marestail in no-till. Winter annuals resume growth soon after the arrival of warm temperatures, so as soon as fields are fit, the weeds will be susceptible to spray.

The evolution and rapid spread of glyphosate resistant weeds has increased people’s awareness of the threat of herbicide resistance. In late 2012 Iowa State University Extension hosted a series of meetings across the state where the issue of herbicide resistance was discussed with farmers and industry representatives. A pre-meeting survey was conducted at these meetings where participants provided information on their weed management practices and perception of herbicide resistance.

Most people are aware that the next ‘new’ technology for managing weeds in corn and soybean will likely be facilitated by the introduction of crops resistant to group 4 herbicides (HG 4). Dow AgroSciences is developing corn, soybean and cotton resistant to 2,4-D (Enlist) whereas Monsanto is developing soybean resistant to dicamba (RR Xtend). Both traits are under review by the USDA, and the companies are hoping to have the new herbicide resistant crops on the market in 2015.
