Frost Seeding and Interseeding Considerations for Pastures This Spring

March 1, 2021 10:45 AM
Blog Post

Many pastures in Iowa were stressed in 2020 from the dry conditions, storm damage, or overgrazing. Consider improving pasture stands and forage production with either frost seeding or interseeding this spring. Proper planning and preparation are needed to successfully improve pastures, and this ICM Blog “Still Time to Start Prepping for Pasture Renovations in 2021” addresses what should be done prior to any frost seeding or interseeding.

Drought conditions persist in western Iowa and have expanded further into central and north central Iowa this week. Common issues reported by ISU Extension field agronomists this past week included poor grain fill and fast reproductive development in corn, increasing disease pressure in some corn fields, concerns regarding off-target movement of dicamba, and a variety of insect issues including corn rootworms, potato leafhoppers, Japanese beetles, twospotted spider mites, and white flies. Read on for more specifics for what’s happening in different regions across the state.

While the drought concerns and drought impacts on row crops and forage crops seems to be the big issue especially in western Iowa, other common issues or questions reported by ISU Extension field agronomists this past week included corn rootworm activity, earworm feeding, Japanese beetles causing defoliation in soybeans and silk clipping in corn, low levels of soybean aphids, potato leafhopper damage, gray leaf spot pressure increasing (especially eastern Iowa), low levels of frogeye leaf spot, fungicide application decisions, and continued reports of dicamba injury.

Regional Crop Update: May 4 - May 12, 2020

What a difference the year makes! According to the May 11th USDA Crop Progress Report, 91% of the expected corn crop and 71% of the expected soybean crop has been planted, which is nearly a month ahead of last year’s planting pace and two weeks ahead of the five-year average. The big news for this last week was the colder temperatures over the weekend and frost injury concerns to emerged crops and forages.

Spring Forage Fertilization Considerations

April 1, 2020

Fertilization is just as important for forages as it is for row crops to maximize productivity. This article addresses spring fertilization considerations for forage crops and pastures.

Nitrogen considerations

Nitrogen (N) applications can either be a one-time, annual application or can be split applied. Suggested N application rates for single application are in Table 1 and rates for split applications are in Table 2.

Fall Weed Control in Pastures

September 26, 2019

Fall is one of the best times for managing perennial and biennial weeds found in pastures or other areas maintained in perennial grass. As perennials prepare for the upcoming winter they move energy reserves from shoots to their perennial vegetative reproductive structures (e.g. rhizomes, perennial rootstocks). Systemic herbicides applied at this time are translocated along with the energy reserves to the reproductive structures, therefore providing more consistent control than applications made at most other times of the year.

Consider Frost Seeding or Interseeding Pastures This Spring

March 6, 2019
interseeding into a pasture

Producers wanting to add to or improve the forage species in their existing pastures should typically consider using either the frost seeding method in February and early March, or interseeding later in the spring months. This has been an unusual end to the winter, so as soon as the snow melts, frost seeding can begin.

Effect of frost on pasture weed control

Encyclopedia Article

Fall can be a good time for growers and custom applicators to handle certain weed problems in pastures and other non-crop areas, thereby avoiding the spring field work rush.  We often receive questions on how late fall treatments can be made while maintaining their effectiveness.  The questions often focus on what impact frost has on the susceptibility of weeds to herbicides.
