Corn Rootworm Demonstrations in Iowa this Summer
Last year, entomologists and field specialists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach received many questions about effective management of corn rootworms as populations have increased in the past two years and farmers have experienced enhanced root injury during drought conditions. We teamed up with the ISU extension field agronomists to host corn rootworm management field days at 7 ISU Research and Demonstration Farms in 2022. Come join us this summer to learn about corn rootworm identification, sampling, management, and resistance.
I See Dead Plants Podcast now available from ISU Integrated Pest Management

Stalk Borers are on the Move Across Iowa
Stalk borer is an occasional pest of corn, but it can be persistent in some fields, especially those fields near fence rows, terraces, and waterways that serve as overwintering sites. Tracking degree days is a useful tool to estimate when common stalk borer larvae begin moving into cornfields from their overwintering hosts. Foliar insecticide applications are only effective when larvae are migrating and exposed to the insecticide. Start scouting corn for larvae when 1,300-1,400 degree days (base 41°F) have accumulated.

VIDEO: Managing Weeds, Insects and Diseases in Iowa Fields
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is helping Iowa farmers manage weeds, insects and diseases in their fields.
Pest management is key to high yields and quality grain. ISU Extension and Outreach specialists are working to provide the tools and resources farmers need to manage those pests. And the ISU Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinic can help farmers and homeowners alike identify diseases and insects that are impacting production.
Tweet your corn and soybean diseases from the field this summer
A Twitter campaign has been started to track corn and soybean diseases throughout the country. While scouting this summer, farmers and agribusiness professionals are encouraged to tweet a photo with the name of the disease, county, and state to either @corndisease or @soydisease.
Palmer amaranth update
Meaghan and Bob’s blog posts on weeds, and seeing a floater spraying yellow herbicide in 30 mph winds on Monday, reminded me to do an update on our newest problem child in the weeds world, Palmer amaranth. While we hoped that the few infestations scattered across Iowa could be contained, unfortunately a few weeks ago I found out that—in Harrison County anyway—Palmer has increased its range and seed bank.
