Climate change impacts on corn planting date and grain yield.

Each year, decisions on planting date and cultivar selection are the major deciding factors on yield potential. Under current, year-to-year variable weather patterns and future climate change these decisions have become much more important. And there is a known knowledge gap on how future climate change will affect these decisions. In a recent paper, we explored future climate change impacts on planting date and cultivar selection using a robust crop model.

We used six climate scenarios to evaluate planting date and cultivar maturity selection:

Mitigating the Risks of Very Early Soybean Planting

April 14, 2020 6:25 PM

Farmers in Iowa have been experimenting with very early soybean planting dates, from late March to mid-April. Based on reviews of the yield data, there is not a consistent yield benefit to planting early as opposed to planting the first week of May. But one benefit of very early planting is that it extends the planting window, allowing farmers to take advantage of ideal soil conditions in April. The data suggests—more so for corn than soybean—that early planting also reduces the risk of yield penalties for late planting.

Updated views on corn and soybean planting recommendations

This year let’s all toss out planting windows for corn. Farmers should be focused on when soil conditions are prime to plant. Soil temperatures need to be on the rise; 50oF and rising. Planting 24-36 hours before a cold spell—regardless of how long—is putting your seed at risk of cold injury and reduced germination.

Soybean Planting Decision Tool

Soybean Planting Decision Tool
Choosing soybean maturities and when to plant soybeans are two critical decisions that farmers make each year. Typically, soybean variety selection occurs months before soybean planting occurs. An added complexity in the decision making is the weather conditions at the time of planting. Each year farmers are faced with the decision of planting into marginal conditions or the potential of late planting. Also, spring and early season weather sometimes forces farmers to replant soybeans later than ideal planting windows.

Relative soybean yield by planting date from Soybean Planting Decision tool

Determining when to plant soybeans and selecting variety maturities are two critical decisions that Iowa farmers make each year. These two decisions greatly affect yield potential and economic return. Typically, soybean variety selection occurs months before soybean planting occurs. An added complexity is current weather conditions at the time of planting.

Evaluation of Commercial Seed Treatments on Soybean at Three Locations in Iowa in 2014

February 10, 2015
Planting and harvesting dates for soybean seed treatment trials

With funding provided from Iowa Soybean Association, 15 current commercial seed treatments from 8 companies were tested at 3 locations in Iowa: ISU Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm (NERF) near Nashua; ISU Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm (SERF) near Crawfordsville, and a farmer’s field in Roland (central Iowa). According to recommended maturity groups, public variety IA2094 was planted in Nashua and IA3014 was planted in Roland and Crawfordsville.  Replicated plots of 10 feet wide by 17.5 feet long were planted at each location.

Planting Date Considerations for Corn Following Corn

Encyclopedia Article

Planting dates are earlier today than ever before. In general, research has shown a small yield loss with very early planting dates and a larger yield loss with later planting dates. Research conducted during 1998-2000 showed that planting approximately between April 20 and May 20 resulted in 100 percent yield (see Iowa State University Extension's Planting Guide. Based on newer research (2003-2006), we believe that this window is actually earlier; corn can be planted prior to April 20 and reach 100 percent yield.

Planting Date Trends

Encyclopedia Article

The fact that corn is now planted earlier than ever before is not a surprise to most producers or agronomists in Iowa. Using data provided by USDA-NASS (National Agricultural Statistics Service) for Iowa, we can clearly see that substantial changes have occurred over the past three decades. One way to compare across the different periods of time is to look at the date associated with 50% of the acreage planted.
