From emergence to 3rd leaf stage is the time when farmers should be out in their fields assessing stands to determine if replanting is necessary. Replant decisions are never easy and are ultimately determined by which decision provides the greatest net income. Each field will have its own set of circumstances that will influence the decision. Remaining stand level and likely replant date will be the key issues.

Crop challenges continue

My area has a real range of conditions with corn planting 65-75% complete in the northwest part of my area. There is maybe 15% of the soybean crop planted in the northwest part of my area. The corn and soybean planting progress is 95%+ complete in the northeast part of my area.


Questions today are replant decisions and effects of the frost damage to corn.

The United States has almost half of the corn crop planted for the season at 45% complete, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Crop Progress Report on May 2.

The USDA reported 57% of corn planted in Iowa as of May 1, with the 5-year average being 28%. The weekly report had 7% of corn emerging in Iowa, which is 4% ahead of the 5-year average.

The Crop Progress Report showed 7% of soybeans had been planted in Iowa as of May 1, 1% behind this time last year, but still leading the 5-year average by 4%.

In the second crop minute this week, Erin Hodgson, ISU entomologist, encourages farmers with corn emerging to scout fields for black cutworm. Elmore refers to the table on page 12 in the Corn Field Guide for current relative yield potential of corn by planting date and population.
