Soybean sudden death syndrome and the 2020 derecho

The 2020 derecho left large amounts of downed corn as it swept across Iowa. Farmers faced the challenge of determining the best way to deal with this corn, which in some cases is being left in the field. Most of these fields will be planted to soybean in 2021, which brings up an interesting question – how will all the corn residue, including corn kernels, affect soybean diseases next season?

Quantifying soybean yield losses due to sudden death syndrome (SDS)

Muhammad Mohsin Raza, a graduate research assistant at Iowa State University in the Plant Pathology and Microbiology department, discusses his research project in this video. Sudden death syndrome is one of the major yield-limiting diseases of soybean and has widely spread across soybean producing states in the U.S. Every year; farmers suffer substantial yield losses due to this disease. Because of the limited understanding of the impact of SDS on soybean yield, it makes it difficult for farmers to decide whether or not to apply management tactics.

The percentage of soybean treated with a seed treatment has increased greatly in recent years. Over the past five growing season, the Robertson lab has evaluated the effect of commercial seed treatments on stand count, disease incidence and severity, and yield of soybean with funding provided by Iowa Soybean Association.
