2019 Soil Health Conference Registration Now Open

Soil health is the foundation for a vibrant and strong agriculture system and economy. Healthy soils are essential to healthy environments including clean air and clean water for sustainable agriculture and livelihoods. The 2019 Soil Health Conference will be held in Ames at the Scheman Building at Iowa State University on February 4-5, 2019. Registration is now open.

Time to Assess and Take Stock of Your Soil Health

As the season approaches its conclusion and harvest conditions are most challenging, there are few things worth remembering to protect and sustain soil health. At this time, soil is susceptible to compaction due to rain and saturated soil conditions. Soils remain saturated longer at this time of the year since water use by crops is negligible and there is low water evaporation due to cool temperatures.

Effects of Crop Residue Removal, Upcoming Soil Health Conference

Leaving crop residue on the soil surface improves nutrient cycling and, ultimately, soil quality that will increase and sustain soil productivity. Through conservation practices that include balanced residue management and soil fertility, environmental quality can be substantially enhanced. By retaining crop residue on the soil surface, soil organic carbon (SOC) and nutrient-holding capacity are increased while protecting the soil from wind and water erosion.

Registration now open for 2017 Soil Health Conference in Ames, Iowa

Building on the success of the Inaugural Soil Health Conference in 2016, the second Soil Health Conference will be held in the Scheman Building at Iowa State University on February 16-17, 2017. This conference is organized by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the Department of Agronomy.

Soil Health Conference poster presentation winners

On Feb. 2-3, the Inaugural Soil Health Conference brought 235 people together to discuss and bring awareness to soil health issues.

In addition to influential presentations by invited speakers, the conference had 20 poster submissions from researchers, scientists, and students that shared their research across all disciplines related to soil health. Posters were displayed for attendees to view throughout the conference.
