With recent reports of mandatory water conservation in several counties across Iowa, some people may be switching their water source from Rural Water to a private well. We wanted to share some resources, for both human and livestock consumption, if you are considering making this shift.

Every year is different. This year’s weather from January 1 to April 25 was cold and wet; a stark contrast to last year’s weather. While we know the differences in weather conditions every year, we do not know the implications on soil water and N at planting time. Field operations have just started and it is important to look at where we are today to provide insight to make informed planting and N application decisions.

Crops are growing rapidly and questions regarding expected end-of-season yields and soil water and nitrogen (N) status in the fields become very timely. A group of faculty, researchers, farm managers, and students from Iowa State University have developed a free, publicly available online platform (http://crops.extension.iastate.edu/facts/) to provide answers to these questions.
