Fight to the Finish for Moisture

August 1, 2023 6:07 AM
Blog Post

We have now reached the critical period for maximizing yield for both corn and soybeans. I will focus on soybeans for this blog and how soil moisture affects moisture stress in beans and soybean yield. With recent rains across a sizable portion of Iowa in mid-July, soil moisture profiles changed dramatically in areas with precipitation, while other areas are in deficit situations. Mother Nature is now in charge with hot temperatures and low moisture.

How does soil moisture affect moisture stress in soybeans?

New deadline to submit data for Soybean Yield Benchmarking Project

The deadline for farmers to submit data for the "Soybean Yield Benchmarking Project" has been extended to April 1, 2016.

The “Soybean Yield Benchmarking Project” is a collaborative effort and is funded by soybean checkoff funds through the North Central Soybean Research Program (NCSRP). Iowa State University Extension and Outreach specialists, Daren Mueller, extension plant pathologist, and I are asking soybean farmers to provide yield and agronomic data specific to their soybean production fields by April 1 for a three-year project to identify key factors that prohibit soybean farmers from obtaining yields that are potentially attainable on their respective farms.

Soybean Response to Drought

June 22, 2012

By Andy Lenssen, Department of Agronomy

Although drought typically is an infrequent occurrence in Iowa, 2012 has been an exception to the rule. Winter, spring and early summer precipitation has been below long-term average, and soybeans in some areas of the state are experiencing periodic water stress due to inadequate available water content in upper soil depths. Farmers have asked whether drought stress early in the season can influence yield if precipitation levels approach long-term average later in the season.
