Crop standability an issue this fall

Harvest is approaching too quickly this fall. Between the dry summer and the spurts of hot weather in August and early September, crop standability is degrading quickly. This blog will go over some potential reasons for standability issues and ways to assess and prioritize fields for harvest.

Scout Corn Fields for Stalk Rot

The challenges of this growing season continued this month when a storm front brought more than 3 inches of rain to much of the state. While the rainfall was welcome for pastures and cover crops, it added to the challenges in corn fields, especially those suffering from drought and the derecho. The rainfall, followed by warm temperatures, will further predispose the stressed corn plants to issues like stalk rots and ear rots. This blog will briefly touch on concerns with stalk rots in corn fields this fall, scouting methods for stalk rots, and resources for identifying stalk rots.

Over the past couple of weeks we’ve been doing stalk rot assessments at several of the ISU Research Farms including the Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm, the McNay Research Farm, and the Ames Farm. While the plants seemed to be standing well, minus where the raccoons had fun in one of the trials, it was not uncommon to find stalk rots in the plants we sliced open to evaluate.

Heads up for stalk rot

Seems like I have written an article on stalk rot about every year for the last five or six seasons. Luckily, for the most part, the last few years it was a “heads up” about a relatively small amount of fields that were having lodging issues. However, this year it sure seems like stalk integrity issues are a lot more prevalent across the state than they have been in years.

Stalk rot and field drying

Stalk rot issues have only gotten worse in recent weeks; in some cases, a lot worse. Stalk rot and resultant standability challenges have reportedly been issues across much of the state, and are not hard to find in most of southwest and west central Iowa.
